Find the prosecution in Butte Superior Court

A criminal case arising in Chico is handled through Butte County Superior Court. Its Criminal Division handles countywide misdemeanors and felonies at One Court Street, Oroville, CA 95965; the criminal desk is 530-532-7011. Use the court’s Case Information page and Case Search link to locate the proceeding, then record the case number and the specific disposition or filing you need.

The public portal covers nonconfidential, unsealed cases without an account. Its detailed coverage varies by predecessor court: Superior Court from 1988, North County Municipal from late 1985, and South County Municipal from 1989, with some older cases indexed following later activity. A missing older entry therefore calls for a clerk inquiry, not a no-record conclusion.

Interpret the online entry before ordering

The portal does not display birth dates, and courthouse terminals can show public documents that cannot be displayed on the internet. Butte also explains that January 1, 1900 can be a converted-data placeholder rather than the actual offense date. Do not use that date to identify a person or event. Match the name, case number and known proceeding details with the underlying file.

For the result of a charge, request the judgment or disposition. A complaint states allegations; a calendar entry concerns a hearing. Tell the clerk if you need a certified copy for an employer, licensing body or other recipient. Confidential or sealed records require an applicable right of access, and an ordinary public-index search cannot establish that right.

Complete the current records form

On the July 2026 Records Request Form, select Criminal and give the case number, party names and birth dates if known, filing date, and each document’s title and filed date. Mark copy, certification or exemplification as required. The form may be delivered or mailed to One Court Street, Oroville, or North Butte County Courthouse, 1775 Concord Avenue, Chico, CA 95928.

For mailed copies, include a self-addressed stamped envelope with enough postage. For pickup, select Chico or Oroville and supply a telephone number for notification. Include a check payable to Butte County Superior Court with a maximum authorized amount written in the memo. Establish the expected page count and total before choosing that limit.

Allow for copying costs and the newer timetable

The current form lists $0.50 per page, $40 for a clerk’s certification plus copying, $50 for exemplification and a $15 search fee, with a note about additional $15 charges for searches exceeding ten minutes. Ask which searches and document certifications your request requires before setting the payment limit. A qualifying court fee waiver may remove copy charges; confirm its application with the clerk.

Use the newer form’s instruction to allow at least three weeks, with requests handled in order received. Its space for an emergency explanation does not promise expedited service. An older official form still visible in search results says one week; do not rely on that older timetable when planning a deadline. Confirm readiness before traveling to either pickup location.

Request the police document separately

For material held by Chico Police, use the city’s NextRequest portal linked from its Police FAQ. Identify the incident, date, location and report number, and specify supplements or recordings separately. Records is at 1460 Humboldt Road, Chico, telephone 530-897-4910, with public hours Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

Chico lists incident reports starting at $10, local clearance letters at $24, local records review at $47.50 and digital photos/video/911 audio at $50 per disc. It describes preparing a copy within ten business days or notifying you of delay, and states that arrest reports are not released through the Public Records Act. Ask what releasable information or authorized personal-review route fits your request; a portal submission is not a release guarantee.

Use DOJ for your own statewide review

California DOJ permits people to request their own criminal-history summary, not to obtain someone else’s through this personal-review route. California residents use Live Scan form BCIA 8016RR with Record Review selected. The DOJ processing fee is $25, with a possible fee waiver; fingerprint rolling charges are separate. Chico Police lists a $35 rolling fee and requires an appointment at 530-897-4910.

Out-of-state applicants follow DOJ’s manual FD-258/BCIA 8705 instructions. If your returned history is inaccurate or incomplete, use the included BCIA 8706 challenge form and supporting evidence such as the court disposition.
